In its 3 decades, Calves Week Sailing Regatta has become one of the most important dates in the national Racing Calendar, with boats travelling from around the coast and from the UK to participate. The Cork Dry Gin Calves Week, run by Schull Harbour Sailing Club, will consists of a four day racing series, including a race around the Fastnet Rock.
The Regatta Week begins with an opening reception and skippers briefing at the Fastnet Marine Centre on Monday August 4th and the first “Round the Islands” race will kick off on Tuesday 6th. The series will finish Friday 8th. The race routes are chosen each day by the Race Officer Neil, depending on the weather and in particular the wind.
A special feature of Calves Week is that the islands in Roaringwater Bay are used instead of buoys as “marks” for the racing, sometimes many times in the one race.
The overall presentation of prizes, closing ceremony and live entertainment takes over Schull Main Street each evening. The festival features nightly fun and live entertainment around the village for both adults and children. There are plenty of activities during the day for the non-sailors to ensure everybody has a thoroughly enjoyable week.
We pride ourselves in Calves Week on our friendliness and with so many boats, people are often looking for crew. If you want to sail, come along to the race office at the Sailing Centre at the School and leave your details with the Race Office.
