Finola Finlay & Robert Harris

Roaringwater Journal.com Blog

Despite living on the opposite sides of the Atlantic Finola Finlay and Robert Harris met after discovering a shared interest in Irish Bronze Age Rock art; Finola was living in Northern Canada and Robert in the UK. They decided to settle together somewhere in the middle – the obvious spot was West Cork. Together they write the blog, Roaringwater Journal about their life here.

  1. They both say their favourite view is that that they see everyday, out their windows overlooking Roaring Water Bay, and agreed that something by Martin Hayes & ‘The Gloaming’ would be perfect, possibly “The Windswept Hills of Tulla”
  2. Robert wishes he had learnt to play the Uilleann pipes and Finola regrets she didn’t take up running sooner.
  3. Obviously, if they have a couple of spare hours they set out in search of Neolithic rock art, which there is plenty of! You just need to know where to look!
  4. When they were 5 – Robert wished he could have been a cat and Finola was devastated to discover that she couldn’t be an alter boy!
  5. Best night out? Robert loves a good trad session and Finola remembers watching a Schull Drama Group production followed by drinks with friends.
  6. What would they take home with them…Robert a stone from the beach and Finola a book from Whyte’s Bookshop.
  7. Robert wishes he owned a pet hare and Finola wants a deck from which to enjoy that magnificent view.

What is it about Schull and the Mizen that attracts people here? Who are the people who populate this quirky little village on the edge of Europe? Why do they come? How do they find us? What do they DO?

Here they tell their stories, responding to the same questions they all have very different answers.
