Geoff McCarthy

Fastnet Framing

As most of the artists in the area will attest, Geoff McCathy is one in a million. In the organized but slightly chaotic workshop of Fastnet Framing (028-28404) this man solves most problems presented. Since the early ’70’s he has called the Mizen his home, whether out the very end (he was last man at the lighthouse) or here in the village.

  1. His favourite view is as you come over the pass from the Durrus Road, and he would like to be listening to Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop Thinking about Tomorrow”.
  2. If he had a couple of hours he would walk the old Green Road from Coosheen to Ballydehob.
  3. He prefers Guinness and the best night out – a few of pints with friends after a day sailing.
  4. When he was 5 he wanted to be a priest – which is hardly surprising really as he is the most helpful, supportive and generous of men.

What is it about Schull and the Mizen that attracts people here?  Who are the people who populate this quirky little village on the edge of Europe?  Why do they come?  How do they find us?  What do they DO?

Here they tell their stories, responding to the same questions they all have very different answers.
